A Castlebar councillor has said he is ‘extremely concerned’ with the news of another business closure in the county town.
Independent councillor Michael Kilcoyne was speaking to The Mayo News yesterday on the same day that Castlebar toy shop Toymaster was having its closing-down sale.
The shop, located in Castlebar Retail Park on the Breaffy Road, notified its customers of the imminent closure via its Facebook page on Sunday afternoon.
The closing-down sale started yesterday morning at 9.30am, when large numbers of shoppers availed of the 50 percent offers on everything in the store.
Toymaster is an association of independently owned stores formed in 1977 as a buying group. There are approximately 250 Toymaster stores between the UK and Ireland.
Job losses
Speaking yesterday, Cllr Kilcoyne said this most recent closure follows on the heels of the closure of several businesses in the town in the last year.
“These further job losses come to a town that really can’t afford to lose any more employment … I’ve heard a number of places are in bother … It’s hard to reconcile with what you’re being told [by the Government] that there has been a lift in the economy – that’s certainly not the case in Castlebar,” said Cllr Kilcoyne.
It is not yet fully known how many jobs will be lost as a result of the closure. The Mayo News contacted the store yesterday evening but was informed there was nobody available for comment.
