TRIBUTES have been paid to a ‘loyal’ and ‘honest gentleman’ after the untimely passing yesterday (Monday) of Brendan Costello (71), Convent Road, Ballinrobe after a battle with illness.
Mr Costello, whose son Fergal is a former captain of the Mayo senior football team, was married to Joan, a native of Kerry. They have three sons, Fergal, Donal and Declan, all of whom are well-known for their GAA accomplishments.
Brendan Costello, a native of Ballinrobe, was well-respected among the local community.
He ran a butcher and bakery business on Main Street in the town up until the early 1990s and then operated the ‘tuck’ shop in Ballinrobe Community School for close to 20 years. He will fondly missed by students who worked along side him in the shop up until February of this year.

Mr Culkeen described Brendan as a ‘trustworthy and honest gentleman’ who had a great way with students in the school.
“He ran the shop like a business and you could put complete and utter trust in him. He got on so well with the kids who worked with him in the shop and he was a very loyal member of staff.”
