A young Dublin-born father of one who was killed in a horrific single vehicle crash on the Newport to Castlebar road in the early hours of September 27 was buried last Friday.
The body of Marc McKenna (30) was only identified last Tuesday after DNA testing was conducted comparing samples with a family member.
Mr McKenna had been living at 1 Quay Hill, Westport, but Gardaí believe he had only moved to the town in recent weeks after living in another area of Mayo for a short period of time.
The collision that claimed Mr McKenna’s life happened at around 1.30am on Saturday morning, September 27. The black Saab being driven by Mr McKenna burst into flames after it left the road and hit a tree at Cartoon, Newport.
National media reported that Mr Kenna’s vehicle burst into flames because it was transporting petrol, but local gardaí told The Mayo News that there was no evidence at the scene to suggest this was the case. The results of a postmortem conducted on the remains of Mr McKenna are not yet available.
Mr McKenna is survived by his brothers, Joe and Ger, and his girlfriend, Jennifer. Mr McKenna’s remains were removed from the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, Artane, last Friday morning for burial at Fingal Cemetery.
