A 20-year-old man who was arrested for possession of cannabis plants worth an estimated €40,000 near Bangor Erris may have been operating a grow house for a number of months.
On Friday morning at approximately 9am, Gardaí from Belmullet carried out a search of a house near Bangor Erris where 30 cannabis plants were sized along with a large drying chamber, fertiliser and liquid feed. The estimated street value of the plants seized is €40,000.
The plants were at various stages of growth and it is understood that some of the plants were close to being cultivated.
The 20-year-old was arrested at the scene and conveyed to Belmullet Garda Station where he is being detained. He was later charged and released on bail to appear before Belmullet District Court on June 11. Gardaí are not looking for anybody else in relation to the discovery.
The male who was from the locality was renting the house located in a rural area between Bangor Erris and Glenamoy. While the operation was not on a large scale, it was the largest seizure of its kind for the Erris area and gardaí believe the operation was ongoing for a number of months.
