JIMMY Grennan from Kilmovee, who died at his residence last week, was a former Fine Gael member of Mayo County Council. He was in his mid-80s and was widely known and respected throughout the region.
Jimmy was elected to Mayo County Council on two occasions, serving as a representative of the people of the region from around 1960 to 1974.
The Grennan family operated a popular grocery store in the village for many years and the shop was a regular meeting place for Kilmovee people in the days long before mobile phones and internet communications. Rural shops were an integral part of the fabric of the small villages in former times and up to the late 1980s.
Jimmy served his people well and was always there to lend a helping hand. “He was a great community man and people had a good time for Jimmy. He worked hard for the people during his years in the Council and was always generous with help and advice.
“If he could help you, he would. That was his nature. Jimmy was always very proud of Kilmovee and its people. We extend condolences to Teresa and the family,” said a friend at the weekend.
Removal took place from the family residence to Kilmovee Church on Thursday evening with interment in St Brigid’s Cemetery, Urlaur, on Friday following the funeral Mass celebrated by Fr Vincent Sherlock, PP.
He is survived by his wife Teresa, sons TJ, Gerald, James, Oliver, Ciaran, daughter Noelle, the extended family circle, relatives, neighbours and friends.
