BELMULLET musician Malachy Gaughan was successfully picked by The Voice of Ireland judge Jamelia on Sunday’s latest installment of the singing competition.
Speaking to The Mayo News yesterday (Monday) 19 year-old Malachy said he was so nervous at the audition that he was shaking on stage.
The former St Brendan’s College student sang TLC’s ‘No Scrub’ and said he chose the song because he wanted to ‘stand out’ and do something different from everyone else.
Jamelia turned her chair midway into the first verse of the song and Malachy admitted, ‘I would have been happy walking off then’. “It was a massive relief,” he added.
Though Bressie was his mentor of choice he was delighted to get his second choice of UK chart topper Jamelia.
Malachy found his love of music thanks to his father JT who is also a musician and who gave Malachy his Les Paul guitar to him for his eighteenth birthday last year.
“I picked it all up from Dad,” said Malachy, who travelled to the auditions with two friends.
He said Dad JT, mother, Michaela, sister Eilis and brother Martin are ‘extremely proud’ of him making it through to the battle stages of the competition.
Malachy will now be paired with a fellow singer in Jamelia’s group and they will go head to head in a sing-off.
Asked if he is confident about his future in the competition the level-headed Belmullet man said that will all depend on who he is paired with.
“I’m not too nervous. I feel a bit better about it now that I’m actually in the competition,” he said.
Speaking about the entire experience so far, Malachy said it is ‘out of this world’.
“It’s massively different travelling from Belmullet meeting all these producers to rehearse.”
Malachy is now concentrating on the ‘battles’ stage of the competition which will be filmed in the coming weeks.
Two other Mayo singers, Paula Finnerty and David O’Regan will appear on next Sunday’s show in a hope to turn the judges chairs.
The Voice of Ireland airs on RTÉ One at 6.30pm.
