Colleagues wish McGuire luck in Council elections

LAST week’s budget meeting of Westport Town Council was the first opportunity councillors had to publicly congratulate Fine Gael councillor Tereasa McGuire on her convention victory in December.
Cllr McGuire defeated colleague Christy Hyland at the West Mayo area convention held in Knockranny House Hotel in a hard-fought contest, and at the start of last week’s budget meeting, Cllr Margaret Adams congratulated her colleague but warned she would have a tough job on her hands if ultimately elected.
“All the elected councillors in the West Mayo Municipal Area will have a tough job on their hands as the area is so big, but Tereasa has worked very hard for this council and deserves the opportunity,” said Cllr Adams, who is retiring from politics herself this year.
Fianna FΡil councillor Brendan Mulroy echoed Cllr Adams’s sentiments but also commiserated with Cllr Hyland, who he said was far from finished with politics.
“We also know Christy will be back … it could this week, next week, or maybe the week after,” quipped Cllr Mulroy.
All the other councillors at the meeting wished Cllr McGuire all the best.
Cllr Hyland too thanked his colleagues for their good wishes, stating that he always liked ‘a good battle’. “I played in a few county finals myself, winning and losing a few, but I always enjoyed the battle and you have to take it on the chin and bounce back,” said Cllr Hyland.
Cllr McGuire, who missed the last meeting of the council, as she was on a humanitarian trip to India, thanked her colleagues for their kind words.
