A man in his early 70s was rescued from the Bangor Trail in the early hours of Saturday morning last when he got into difficulty.
The man, from the Dublin area, was on the trail some five kilometres from Bangor Erris on Saturday morning when he got lost in the darkness in very poor weather conditions.
At 1.05am he rang 999 to say he did not want to risk going any further and required assistance.
Gardaí and the Coast Guard both went to the area and a Coast Guard helicopter was dispatched for the rescue.
The man was identified by the helicopter’s infrared camera, although they could not establish clear visual contact.
However they were able to direct Coast Guard and Gardaí on the ground to the man’s location and at 5.55am he was brought from his location to the roadside, from where he was brought to Mayo General Hospital suffering from mild hypothermia.
Mayo Mountain Rescue were alerted and were in the process of sending a team but they were stood down once the Coast Guard located the man.
