Mayo is one of 13 counties to be included in a pilot employment scheme that will see long-term unemployed people being given work at local authorities. The initiative, called Gateway, could be up and running before the end of the year.
Gateway is being developed jointly by the City and County Managers’ Association in conjunction with the Department of Social Welfare and the Department of the Environment.
Ballinrobe-based councillor Michael Burke (FG) told The Mayo News that the number of potential positions in Co Mayo remained unclear as yet. “There might be 50 coming to Mayo, which would be divided into six areas which would give Ballinrobe/Claremorris six or seven,” explained Cllr Burke, who also speculated that the unemployed people could be deployed in ‘general maintenance’ throughout the county. “They would be involved in general maintenance in areas that the council can’t get to anymore, which would free-up outdoor staff,” he said.
The Department of Social Welfare will select long-term unemployed people from the live register to put forward to the local authorities for interview and selection for the Gateway positions.
It seems the scheme is already generating interest among those looking for work.
