Ballinrobe Musical Society were celebrating recently after it was announced that they received two Association of Irish Musical Societies (AIMS) awards for their production of Evita. Newcomer to the Society, Angela-Curley Staunton picked up a deserved Best Actress nomination for her poignant portrayal of Eva Peron. And the capable Niall Heaney has been nominated for Best Stage Manager for the seamless fast moving production.
Speaking to The Mayo News her the nominations, Angela said she was shocked at the nomination. The Galway native said the announcement of the nomination came as a lovely birthday present last week.
“My initial reaction was shock and disbelief and then that turned into excitement. It’s an absolute buzz to get a nomination,” enthused Angela. The nomination is the second for Ms Curley-Staunton who was nominated for Best Newcomer a number of years ago for her role in Calamity Jane with the Marian Choral Society Tuam. Admittedly giving her a ‘whole new confidence’, Angela said she was never thinking about a possible nomination.
“A lot of people said I was in with a chance but in my own head I wasn’t thinking of that I was just thinking about the Society getting nominations,” she concluded.
Ballinrobe Musical Society Chairperson Des Treacy said it was ‘great to have got the nominations’.
“It’s great when individuals get nominations because the whole society rows in behind them. We all knew Angie [Angela] was amazing but it’s great that she has been recognised. With Niall it’s great that he’s up for it again. His job affects so many people in a production,” explained the Chairperson.
With 2013 being a double anniversary, the Society put on their first show 70 years ago, and it has been 40 years without a break in production, the committee are already hard at work in deciding on next year’s show.
“As it’s a double anniversary we are already hard at work to pick a special show to mark the two milestones. We’re going to keep it going for many a year to come,” concluded Mr Treacy
A group from the Ballinrobe Society will attend this year’s AIMS awards which will take place on June 15, at the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney.
