MAYO manager James Horan will find out this Thursday the full repercussions for his side after two-time Young Footballer of the Year Cillian O’Connor dislocated his shoulder last Saturday.
Playing for his club Ballintubber against Claremorris in the Mayo Senior Football Championship, O’Connor suffered a re-occurrence of a shoulder injury he picked up last October.
It happened 41 minutes into the game as the Mayo star tried to dispossess Claremorris’s Liam Feeley, and the silence in Clogher signified how supporters of both clubs were aware of the implications the injury could have for Mayo’s season.
O’Connor was taken by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital where medics reset the shoulder.
The Mayo News understands that O’Connor will require surgery on the shoulder, and the scan on Thursday will help to determine whether he needs to have an operation immediately or if surgery can be deferred until winter.
Even if surgery is not required now, O’Connor will miss Mayo’s game against Roscommon on June 16, at the very least. Immediate surgery could rule O’Connor out for the rest of the season.
Speaking to The Mayo News in the aftermath of Saturday’s game, Ballintubber manager Peter Ford confirmed O’Connor was requesting to have his shoulder ‘put back in’ whilst being treated on the field.
“It’s a disaster. He was having a great game and he was playing brilliantly since he came back from injury. It’s a nightmare for him,” said the former Galway and Sligo manager.
O’Connor had finished his final summer exam in St Patrick’s College in Drumcondra at 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon and drove down straight after it to line out with his club.
He returned to action last March after a six month lay-off from his first shoulder injury, sustained in a league game for Ballintubber one week after Mayo’s All-Ireland Final defeat to Donegal. He has scored 0-24 for Mayo in the six games since his return.
