Residents of the Dunbeg Estate in Castlebar have been told by Mayo County Council Director of Services Seamus Granahan that the council are not in a position to take over the estate.
The estate, made up of over 100 houses and apartments was developed by Kamer Construction less than ten years ago but since the company entered receivership, residents have entered a state of limbo with the management company.
Residents attended a meeting of Castlebar Town Council last week in the hope that the estate could be taken over, and were looking to end what they feel is a state of limbo due to the resignation of an agent of the management company overseeing the estate.
Mr Granahan said he had been in direct contact with the receiver and explained that a commitment was given by the receiver to engage in legal processes. Those in attendance were informed that the council have served legal notices on the receiver on a total of four estates in the town and served Kamer Construction with four enforcement notices.
Councillor Harry Barrett said he was ‘astounded’ that the receiver was still allowed to negotiate sales of properties.
Independent Cllr Michael Kilcoyne stated that if there wasn’t action taken in the next number of weeks, High Court action would have to proceed in order to prevent further sales.
Mr Granahan informed the residents that although a date could still not be given for the takeover, the council were receiving legal advice on ‘the action we can, or can’t take’ regarding stopping the sales of assets.
A timeline of four to six weeks was given to residents for the duration of further progress.
