Castlebar residents rue rowdy students

Cllr Harry Barrett is calling for more Garda foot patrols in Castlebar after reports of serious anti-social behaviour in one well-known estate.
Barrett was contacted by the residents of Aglish Estate, Castlebar, who complained of serious anti-social behaviour by students returning from nights out. The residents say the students are ‘shouting and roaring’ through the estate in the early hours of the morning; throwing beer cans and plastic cups into residents homes; breaking glass beer bottles on the pavements and streets; moving rubbish bins into the middle of the streets; littering; urinating; and going in and out of residents gardens.
“Families are suffering in Aglish Estate and this must stop and the first port of call is the Garda SiochΡna,” Cllr Barrett said. “This is an appalling and consistent breach of the peace. I am now calling on Garda management to increase visible foot patrols in Castebar. If there is a resource issue, the Garda Reserve must be called in immediately. We need the deterrent of a visible Garda presence in Castlebar.”
Commenting on the complaint, GMIT Student Union President Clare Lawlor told The Mayo News that she had been contacted by one resident of the estate, but the resident wasn’t sure if the offenders were students or not.
“That’s not a student village, it’s just people’s houses, and there are some non-students over there. I would love if the residents’ association would come and speak to me,” said Ms Lawlor, adding that apart from the single resident, she hadn’t been contacted by anyone else regarding the matter, including Cllr Barrett.
