Syringe of blood used in attempt to rob Claremorris Credit Union
A man was remanded on continuing bail last week awaiting charges in relation to the attempted robbery of a Credit Union. At a sitting of Castlebar District Court, Cory Byrne of 3 Brighton Terrace, Bray, Co Wicklow was in front of Judge Denis McLoughlin for a charge of attempted robbery. On 28 July 2011 the accused is said to have entered St Colman’s Credit Union at 2.30pm wearing a ski mask and carrying a syringe filled with his own blood. Mr Byrne is then said to have approached a member of staff, pointed the syringe at her and said ‘there’s AIDS in this, just give me the money’. The court heard that Mr Byrne was subsequently arrested and brought to Swinford Garda Station in relation to the attempted robbery. Judge McLoughlin subsequently refused jurisdiction and remanded Mr Byrne on continuing bail until November 20, where the book of evidence will be served to send him to the Circuit Court for trial.
