A YOUNG Castlebar woman will run the New York City Marathon in a bid to raise much-needed funds for Mayo Rape Crisis Centre. Trish Reddington, who is a former Mayo Ladies football player, will participate in the world’s biggest marathon, on November 4 next. The Big Apple is familiar territory for the Keelogues native who lived in New York for a number of years until her return home a year ago. A former bartender at PJ Carney’s on 57th Street, she was a member of the New York City Athletics Club, which, coincidentally, was just across the street from her workplace. Since she began running in 2008, Trish has completed six half-marathons, and two New York city triathlons in 2009 and 2010, helping to raise funds for the Leukaemia and Lymphoma Society of New York City. Currently training on the roads of Mayo, she is running an average 20 miles per week. “I am not keeping to an exact timetable as it is important to listen to the body and rest up also,” she said. Mayo Rape Crisis Centre’s (MRCC) director, Ms Ruth McNeely has welcomed Trish’s initiative and commitment. “We are thrilled to have Trish Reddington running for us in November in the biggest race in the world. The centre has been like so many other charities struggling to maintain a service that does not compromise on standards or on response with an ever smaller budget. It is always moving when someone picks us as their charity of choice,” Ruth McNeely told The Mayo News yesterday. She continued: “Sexual violence is hidden in our society still, it is just as hard today to walk into a Rape Crisis Centre as it was when we opened 18 years ago. The crime of sexual violence thrives on secrecy. We are a small organisation that does not have the capacity to seek out fundraisers, the subject is one that often people do not want to be associated with, so we are very grateful to Trish for choosing us to support. We are sadly still as needed as we ever were and happily more people are in contact with us every day.” Located in central Castlebar, Mayo Rape Crisis Centre has outreach services in Ballina, Belmullet and Ballyhaunis. Despite the ongoing challenging times, with significant budgetary cutbacks, the centre has continued to provide a broad service. Over the last year it has recruited 20 new, fully-trained, volunteers. In the coming months MRCC will also host other fundraising initiatives, including a ‘Fright Night’ on November 31, Halloween night. The hair-raising event is organised by Johnny Oosten and Rita Scott, of the Jteam, who join forces with the Mayo Paranormal Seekers. They explained: “We will be staying the night at a haunted house while the team investigates ghostly activity. We will be joined by I-Radio’s Fergal Darcy and Buzz from The Hardy Bucks and the night will be filmed by Irishtv.ie. As we are all facing our worst fears by taking on this challenge, we really hope we attract lots of sponsors for the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre.”
New York City Marathon ESTABLISHED in 1970, the New York City Marathon now attracts over 100,000 applications, with 47,000 runners participating in last year’s race. The 26.2 mile challenge brings runners through all five of New York’s boroughs – starting on Staten Island, through Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan.
