Tuam Pastoral Council launches new magazine


The Chairman and members of the Diocesan Pastoral Council of the Archdiocese of Tuam are pleased to announce the launch of a new magazine aimed at improving communications between the Church, the clergy and parishioners.
During a series of listening meetings organised by the Diocesan Pastoral Council (DPC) over the past two years one of the issues identified was the lack of a proper communications structure to keep people informed on what is happening within the church. New Dawn is one element of the DPC’s efforts to fill the void.
It is planned to publish New Dawn on a quarterly basis and the magazine will shine a spotlight on the vast range of activities throughout the archdiocese, exploring the changes in the Church as the laity, through pastoral councils and cluster groups, take on a greater role supporting the work of the Church.
The increased role of pastoral councils is highlighted in this first edition which also explores how people can become more involved with their Church.
Also included is a foreword by Archbishop Michael Neary as well as articles on the contribution made by people from the Archdiocese in the celebration of the Eucharistic Congress, the great work being done with the elderly by Transition Year students and interviews with the two newly ordained priests Fr Eugene O’Boyle and Fr Shane Sullivan on their ordination.
It is intended that the magazine will be very much a magazine of the people of the archdiocese and that parishes, pastoral councils and lay people generally will avail of it as a platform to highlight issues and help promote the work of the church in their areas.
Fr Fintan Monahan, Secretary to the Archdiocese, is the editor of New Dawn.
He said: “The magazine is our response to the demand expressed by very many people for an improved communications structure to keep people informed about the many happenings going on in the Church and parishes of the archdiocese.
“The intention of the editorial board is to ensure the magazine is responsive to the needs of the people and reflects what is happening in the church, at the level of the clergy, at pastoral council level and among young people.
“It is a difficult time for the Church because of the decline in the number of priests but it is also a challenge and a time of opportunity for greater involvement by lay people,” said Fr Fintan.
