A 21-year-old student who died in a single road traffic accident near Newport in the early hours of Saturday morning was buried yesterday following his funeral in Newport. Peter Dominic Claydon of Carrowbeg Fergus, Achill Road, Newport died in Mayo General Hospital shortly after he was involved in a single vehicle accident at Clooneshil, Newport on Saturday June 16. A female passenger who was also in the car also suffered from serious injuries in the collision and transferred to intensive care in Mayo General Hospital. She remains in hospital but her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. A mechanical engineering student in the University of Limerick, Mr Claydon was an only son of Peter and Patricia Claydon and is also survived by his younger sister, Grace. He was laid to rest in Killeen Cemetery following Funeral Mass in St Patrick’s Church in Newport. The incident occurred at approximately 3.15am when the car was travelling from Castlebar towards Newport when the vehicle is understood to have hit a grass verge and gone out of control at a sharp bend along the road, approximately two miles from Newport. The road was closed off by the gardaí to allow the forensic collision investigation team to examine the circumstances of the accidents and was soon reopened. A Garda spokesperson said the investigation was still ongoing and they could not say what was the cause of the accident. Cllr Michael Holmes who lived close to the Claydon family said he knew the family and expressed his shock at the news of the death.
