The incident occurred at approximately 3.15am when the car was travelling from Castlebar towards Newport when the vehicle is understood to have hit a grass verge and gone out of control at a sharp bend along the road, approximately two miles from Newport.
The road was closed off by the gardaí to allow the forensic collision investigation team to examine the circumstances of the accidents and was soon reopened. A Garda spokesperson said the investigation was still ongoing and they could not say what was the cause of the accident.
Cllr Michael Holmes who lived close to the Claydon family said he knew the family and  expressed his shock at the news of the death.
