A married man from Belmullet who had 24 previous convictions for being found intoxicated in a public place had two more similar convictions recorded against his name at the local district court last Wednesday.
Larry Conroy of Tonamace, Belmullet was found lying on a bench in Carter Square, Belmullet on Monday, July 11 last by Garda Sara Cosgrove. She told the court he was in a highly intoxicated state and that she tried to help him to stand up but he was stumbling and so she arrested him for his own safety.
Garda Cosgrove also told the court that on Monday, August 15 she saw Conroy on Barrack Street in the town, stumbling with ‘women and children on the street’.
The court heard that Conroy had 30 previous convictions, 24 for being intoxicated in a public place. Mr Conroy is unemployed, the court heard and is married with grown-up children.
Judge Denis McLoughlin convicted and fined Conroy €50 in respect of each offence.
