A TEENAGER was ordered to clean the doors and windows of a Belmullet Pharmacy every Sunday morning until next October after he was caught urinating on them.
Judge Mary Devins made the order after she heard that 18-year-old Thomas McCann, Rathavisteen, Belderrig, Ballina had urinated on the door of Reilly’s Pharmacy on Barrack Street, Belmullet at 1am on April 4 last.
Garda Joe Keane explained that when he spoke to the defendant he was highly intoxicated and refused to give his address before running away. He was apprehended later in the town at 2am.
The court heard that on May 11, 2010, the defendant was disqualified from driving for two years for drink driving when he took a car from a garage in Glenamoy and drove towards Tubbercurry. He was also convicted of two counts of dangerous driving, driving without insurance and not having a drivers licence in relation to the same incident.
On hearing of these convictions, Judge Devins questioned the defendant’s mother, Sharon McCann on whether she thought her son was an alcoholic at age 18. Mrs McCann replied ‘no’ but Judge Devins said it sounds like he does and that they did ‘not want to face up to it’.
Mr Michael Bohan, solicitor for the defendant said he felt he does have a problem and was sorry for what he did. He added that other matters involving Mr McCann were pending before the court.
Judge Devins asked Mr McCann who he thought had cleaned the door of the pharmacy, the defendant answered, ‘the staff’.
“They washed your urine off the door,” was Judge Devins’ reply to him before adjourning sentencing for the other matters to come before the court.
She added that while she did not want to humiliate Mr McCann, she wanted him to wash the door and window of Reilly’s Pharmacy every Monday morning.
Mr McCann said he was starting a job in Carrick on Shannon and would be unable to do it but was agreeable to do it on Saturday mornings. However, Judge Devins said ‘all the damage was done’ on Saturday night and it was agreed to carry out the task every Sunday morning. She adjourned sentencing until October 12.
