The Achill Pipe Band beat 19 other bands to emerge victorious in the recent British Pipe Band Championship.
Achill Pipe Band wins British Championship
AN Irish win in a major is an occasion to celebrate, and such a time has come to Achill. The Achill Pipe Band has now joined the higher echelons of the international pipe band community with their first major victory, The British Pipe Band Championship. A clean sweep across the boards in piping and drumming secured first place in a high-quality field of 20 bands. Speaking after the announcement of the results, Pipe Major Conor Molloy and Drum Sergeant Owen McNamara echoed each other’s sentiments of pride in what the band had achieved, praise for the commitment of members and ambition for further success in 2011. Further cause to celebrate and worthy of mention is the success of St Laurence O’Toole’s in securing the Grade 3 B title, featuring a strong Achill contingent in their piping corps. The focus now shifts to further majors this season, with The World Championships taking place in Glasgow this August. Based on results to date this year, the Achill Pipe Band will undoubtedly be taking the trip over to contest that title, confident that they are definitely in with a shout.
