25-year-old woman dies in ‘freak’ beach buggy accident
Anton McNulty
A Tragic and freak accident is how a fatal accident on Lacken Strand in which a 25-year-old woman was killed on Sunday afternoon was described. The incident occurred at approximately 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon when a female and a male were involved in an accident involving a beach buggy. The woman, who has been named locally as Edel Doyle from Crossmolina, sustained serious injuries at the scene and died later that evening in Mayo General Hospital. The 28-year-old male who was with Ms Doyle in the buggy was also brought to Mayo General Hospital but his injuries are not described as life threatening. Gardaí in Ballina said the buggy seemed to have overturned on the beach and they were treating the matter as a ‘tragic accident’. They said a number of people were on the beach enjoying the good weather and they would like to talk to people who may have witnessed the accident. Killala based councillor Jarlath Munnelly said the incident was a tragic and freak accident on what should have been an enjoyable day. “Lacken Strand is very popular and Sunday was a great day and this makes it all the more tragic. It is a tragedy for everyone and people around Lacken are very shocked. I understand this was a freak accident and I sympathise with the girl’s family at this moment,” he said.
