Man in his 40s in garda custody on tenth anniversary of disappearance
Anton McNulty
Ballina Gardaí investigating the disappearance of Sandra Collins more than ten years ago have arrested a man in his 40s. The man, who is from the Ballina area, was arrested at 10.25am on Thursday and taken to Ballina Garda Station. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 and can be questioned for up to 24 hours. Sandra Collins disappeared in the Killala area on December 4, 2000, and was last seen leaving a fish and chip shop on her way home shortly after 11.30pm. The fleece jacket belonging to the 29-year-old was found the next day at Killala pier but gardaí do not believe she entered the water. On the tenth anniversary of her disappearance, gardaí renewed their appeal for information which has led to significant progress in the case. On Wednesday morning, March 23, a 21-year-old female was arrested on suspicion of withholding information in relation to the case. She has since been released without charge.
