A 30-year-old Kilmovee farmer dies after falling while walking home from a night out in icy conditions
Fourth man dies due to icy conditions
Rowan Gallagher
THE recent cold spell of weather has been connected to a fourth death in Mayo last week after a tragic incident in Kilmovee where a 30-year-old farmer lost his life after falling on ice. Nicholas Regan of Culcastle, Kilmovee was walking home after a night out and is believed to have slipped on compacted ice and hit his head. The man reached his home but later died from the injuries he sustained despite attempts to revive him in the early hours of Saturday night. Gardaí in Swinford declined to comment on the incident and described it as a ‘tragic accident’ and that the family need to be given privacy in the lead up to Christmas. This, the latest weather related death in Mayo, comes after three men lost their lives due in weather-related incidents over the last fortnight. A postmortem on Mr Regan was carried out on Sunday at Mayo General Hospital. Mr Regan is mourned by his parents Martin and Tess, sisters Patricia, Olive and Edel, brothers Tom and Eugene, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends. The deceased man will be reposing at The Sharkey Funeral Home, Ballaghaderreen this evening (Tuesday), December 21, from 4pm with removal at 6.45pm to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Kilmovee, arriving at 7.30pm. Mass of the Resurrection will take place on Wednesday, December 22, at 12 noon, with the funeral proceeding to Naomh Mobhí Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Donations, if desired, to the Kilmovee Community Alert c/o Sharkey Funeral Directors.
