MAYO Sine Fein Councillors have welcomed the return of their leader to contest for a seat in the Dail in the next general election.
Gerry Adams has thrown his hat in for election in the Louth constituency after his colleague Arthur Morgan announced he would not be seeking re-election. Mr Adams will be also be resigning his West Belfast seat at Westminster.
Speaking after the announcement on Saturday last, Cllr  Conway Walsh said “this is a very significant step for Sinn Féin and for politics in the South.  The lack of real leadership in this country has been very obvious for some time now.  Gerry Adams will provide that leadership.  We believe he will be elected in Louth and very much look forward to having him in the DΡil where he will be able to effect real and necessary change”.
Commenting on the announcement from Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams that he intends to resign from the Assembly and seek election to the Dail in County Louth, Cllr Gerry Murray said that Mr Adams was leaving the safest seat in the country to help the Irish people.
“The decision by Gerry Adams to leave one of the safest seats in Ireland to seek election to the DΡil in Louth and to play a central role in the battle for Ireland’s economic recovery is leadership in action. It is the sort of leadership this country needs at this time in our history.
“The decisions taken by the Irish people in the months ahead will have an effect for generations. Gerry’s status as a political leader, negotiator and strategist is unquestioned. He will bring unique qualities to the DΡil and to the national effort required to rebuild the economy and protect frontline public services,” Cllr Murray concluded.
