Drunk man who demands to be arrested gets his way
A LOUISBURGH man who punched a Garda in the stomach after jumping through the Garda Station lobby window demanded to be arrested - and duly was. Stuart Cotterill, Bunowen, Louisbourgh, had been drinking all day on September 18 this year, and proceeded to Westport Garda station where he became abusive and demanded to be arrested, Westport District Court heard last week. Mr Cotterill tried to force his way into the Garda office area from the foyer and ended up breaking the door handle. In what was described as a ‘extraordinary feat’, Mr Cotterill jumped through the small window in the foyer of the garda station and assaulted Garda Siobhan Clancy by punching her in the stomach, sending her backwards. A probation report was ordered by Judge Mary Devins who told the court that it was likely that a custodial sentence would be imposed. “It will be a miracle if he doesn’t go to prison,” Judge Devins concluded.
