Castlebar walls vandalised

Vandalism again on streets of Castlebar

DRUNKEN youths have been blamed for a recent spate of vandalism on the streets of Castlebar and the town won’t stand for it, according to Mayor Ger Deere.
Wall caps were displaced and smashed at Knockthomas, Castlebar in the early hours of Saturday last, October 9.
The front walls of several houses were damaged and as of yet no one has been arrested in relation to the damage.
Councillor Ger Deere has called for the culprits to be given community service orders in order to teach the vandals a lesson.
“I visited the local residents in the area on Saturday morning to witness the damaged walls and subsequently notified the local Gardaí.  The offenders on this occasion deliberately went out of their way to cause the damage.
“I want a strong message to go out that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated in any area of Castlebar.  If any individual possesses information on this incident; they should make every effort to contact the Garda SíochΡna,” added Mayor Deere.
There is no CCTV in the area but gardai are reviewing nearby footage to try and ascertain who was in the area at the time of the incident.
“If those responsible are charged, they should be made do some sort of community service such as the work on behalf of the Tidy Towns to help repair the damage they so willingly caused.  I hope that every effort is made to ensure that those responsible will be brought to bear responsibility for their actions,” concluded Mayor Deere.
This most recent act of vandalism comes after a number of cars were badly damaged in Castlebar in last month on a separate Saturday night.
A file has been sent to the DPP and the Gardai are asking anyone with information to please contact them.
