The announcement of the five-man committee that will interview candidates for the Mayo senior manager’s position has caused a flurry of activity on the betting markets over the last 24 hours. Some national bookmakers have suspended betting on the Mayo management race completely after being inundated with requests about one of the candidates, Tommy Lyons, yesterday (Wednesday). Meanwhile, Stagg Betting in Ballindine have also confirmed that there has been a dramatic seachange within the county since Tuesday night’s Mayo GAA Board meeting to select the interview committee. The South Mayo bookmakers, who suspended betting briefly earlier this week, have now installed Tommy Lyons as the 1/3 favourite with James Horan now at 2/1. However, the long-time odds-on shot to be appointed, John Maughan, is now ‘friendless’ in the betting and has drifted from 4/6 to 5/2, third favourite. Anthony McGarry remains the 14/1 outsider. “Events over the last few days have changed everything,” John Stagg told The Mayo News. “Especially the County Board meeting on Tuesday night. Reading between the lines, it seems to be heading in one direction only now. “The confirmation of the selection committee caused a shake-up in the market, and Tommy Lyons seems to be only man that people are interested in backing now.” The Mayo News has also learned that interviews for the vacant post are unlikely to be concluded before this weekend so the identity of John O’Mahony’s successor may not be known until late next week.
