A MOTORIST was taken to Mayo General Hospital on Monday morning after two cars were involved in a collision just yards from where four young girls were killed on a dangerous bend on the N17 on November 17 last. The accident occurred on Monday morning at 7.20am when a van and a car travelling in opposite directions collided between two bends on the N17 at Carrownurlaur, between Milltown and Ballindine. Lat year Sarah Byrne (20) from Headford, Marie Stephanie Ní Conghaíle (19) from Rossaveal and Teresa Molloy (19), Leitir Mór in Connemara and Sorcha Rose McLoughlin (19) from Wexford, whose parents hail from Achill, all died after the car in which they were travelling collided head-on with a lorry. The collision on Monday morning occurred when the front of the van collided with the side of the car between two bends which is known as a ‘black-spot’ location. A spokesperson for Tuam Gardaí told The Mayo News that there has been a number of accidents at that location in recent years. The male driver of the car was taken by ambulance to Mayo General Hospital but his injuries are not considered to be life threatening. The remaining occupants of the car and van were treated at the scene but they were not hospitalised.
