Mike Finnerty
THE melee that took place during the recent Mayo senior club championship match between Breaffy and Charlestown has led to both clubs being hit with proposed fines of €500 each and the possibility of losing ‘home advantage’ for the final round of group matches. The Mayo News understands that both clubs received notification of their proposed sanctions yesterday (Monday). However, a spokesperson for Breaffy GAA club confirmed that they intend to appeal the proposed penalties. Charlestown GAA club are due to discuss the matter later this week. Breaffy’s Aidan O’Shea and Charlestown’s Tom Parsons were both red-carded by referee, Liam Devenney, as a result of the incident two weeks ago. They are both likely to miss their clubs’ penultimate championship matches through suspension but should be available for the concluding round of group games. Breaffy are scheduled to play their final group game against West Mayo while Charlestown were due to welcome Kiltane to Fr O’Hara on the weekend of August 14/15. Both clubs will also be in action the weekend before (August 7/8) as Breaffy travel to Kiltane and Charlestown make the trip to Westport in the only five-team section of the senior championship.
MEANWHILE, the controversial broadcasting tower at McHale Park, Castlebar will be off limits for next Sunday’s Connacht final. A contingency plan will be put in place to accommodate local and national media personnel at the biggest fixture being hosted at the venue this year. An Bord PleanΡla are due to rule next week on whether the repositioning of floodlights at the stadium required planning permission.
