Amelia McQuillan (12) was beaming with her well deserved cup in hand. The Westport Golf Club representative won the Connaught Girls Open in the U-12,U-14 and U-16 category. An impressive hat-trick of trophies for the Mayo golf talent.

Amelia shot a fantastic score of 46 points for the 18 holes in really wet and tough conditions for everyone. “She is has no fear to hit the ball far, she loves getting the driver out and giving it a good blast. But yesterday, a new putter made the difference for her,” said her father David McQuillan, speaking to The Mayo News.

She has been playing from a young age, explained McQuillan, with him being the golf professional at Westport golf club and getting involved in the "golf4girls4life" Westport junior programme (see Instagram post below).

"Amelia has taken inspiration from other Westport girls who has won the same championship from the likes of Ellen Lonergan and Lauren Brady Thornton was did the same as Amelia did this year."

Next one up for her is the “wee wonders” UK & Ireland finals held in Scotland on August 24+25, in Gullane golf club just outside Edinburgh.
