The people of Westport came out in strong support of local Fine Gael candidate Keira Keogh in her bid to win a Dáíl seat with tallies showing she secured close to 40 percent of the local vote.

With all boxes bar Inishturk and Clare Island now tallied, Keogh has picked up 38 percent of the vote in the Westport Electoral Area which will put her in contention of winning the seat vacated by the retirement of Michael Ring.

While Ring secured 48 percent of the local vote for Fine Gael in 2020, Keogh will be satisfied with her performance on her home patch.

Independent Ireland and Louisburgh-based candidate Chris Maxwell took 15 percent of the vote while Rose Conway-Walsh of Sinn Féin picked up 13 percent.

Fianna Fáil candidate Lisa Chambers picked 8 percent of the vote in Westport while Alan Dillon (FG) followed her on 6 percent.
