In Castlebar

Ray Larkin’s Mayo charges suffered a three point defeat in a warm Hastings Insurance MacHale Park on Sunday afternoon. A fantastic start for the visitors which saw the Red Hand county score four goals in the opening nine minutes proved costly for the Green and Red as they struggled to recover from an electric Tyrone start.

Mayo trailed at the break 5-7 to 1-12 with Tooreen’s Eoin Delaney scoring Mayo’s goal.

The second half was much more positive for Larkin’s side as they outscored Tyrone 0-13 to 0-9. The Phillips brothers, Adrian and Cormac combined for a tally of 0-16 as the Ballyhaunis pair were prominent on the afternoon.

The hosts battled well and reduced the gap as time went on, however time was against them as Tyrone secured a fine win on the road. One would have to say Mayo’s poor start cost them as Mayo now travel to face Fermanagh next.

A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s edition of The Mayo News.
