THE ‘Mayo way’, as it were, during the halcyon years, has been to embrace the chaos, and, based on the stats, there seems to be a return to the days of yore.

There are some very interesting statistics.

Mayo’s scoring and concession of regular, ‘single’ points this year was similar to last season. In 2025, they scored 96 points, whereas this season, they raised 90 white flags, a decrease of six.

In terms of concessions, there has been an increase of two from 87 to 89.

The uptick in two-pointers has already been touched upon, and there has also been little development in terms of successful shots against Mayo from outside the big arc, with Mayo conceding one less this time around (15 in 2026, 16 in 2025).

When you delve into the goals, though, is where you find the real changes.

Mayo are tied with Westmeath for having scored the highest number of goals (twelve), a 140 per cent increase on their 2025 return of five.

However, there seems to be a problem looking after their own knitting at the other end.

Andy Moran’s men conceded ten goals, the fifth-highest concession in the country, meaning they have had a hike of 120 per cent from their five concessions last time out, when they had the second-best effort in the League.

However, the overall picture is positive, although the concession of so many goals raises a red flag.

At the end of the 2025 season, Mayo’s scoring difference sat at -1. Some twelve months later, that difference has shot up to 26.

If Mayo can start to stop leaking goal chances (and that’s a big if) it would be a big step in narrowing the gap to the sides in the top bracket in the country.
