Mayo senior ladies’ football manager, Diane O’Hora, expressed satisfaction with her side’s victory in Athlone on Sunday, following their Ladies’ National League clash against Westmeath.

We’re really happywe are delighted to get the win today. I’m really proud of the girls," she stated.

"There were so many purple patches in that game, and I’m proud of what we did during them and how we reacted to them when they had them. I think our girls did really well. There was really good movement in attack, and our players were really hard to mark.

Despite the comfortable victory, the former Kildare manager was concerned with her side’s defending in the second half.

“We have to be a little bit better in defendingThere’s a lot of work to be done in many areas. Westmeath got eleven shots off in the second half, with no pressure on them.

"I’m not sure were we defending too deep, but it’s something we will need to improve on.

Mayo scored two goals in quick succession in the opening quarter on Sunday, and their manager admitted that the fast start was huge for the girls in green and red.

“It puts you in a really good position when you get a start like that. Westmeath got to grips with us then. They made it hard for us to get our kickouts off.

"They also stopped our overlaps and made it difficult for us, which is a credit to them.”

Mayo play their final league game next weekend against Monaghan. They will require a positive result on Sunday and other results to go their way, if they are to be promoted.

O’Hora stated that she is looking forward to their clash against the Ulster side.

“Monaghan are a smashing team, they have been getting better and better in every game, we’ve watched them.

"They are getting players back from injury, which is making them better. However, I would like to say the same thing about us. We’re really looking forward to it.
