Two Mayo LGFA teams travelled to Kerry at the weekend.

Despite tough weather conditions, 20 teams from 14 counties competed in the 37th Lidl sponsored Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé, the famed adult ladies and men’s Gaelic football festival which took place across West Kerry.

Achill Ladies competed in the intermediate ladies cup while Breaffy lined out in the junior ladies cup with some good results.

In the four team intermediate ladies cup, Achill played in their straight knockout semi-final against West Keerry’s Corca Dhuibhne.

The local side led from early on, leading by 2-6 to 0-4 at half time. Aided by a big wind in the second half, the local side pulled away despite Achill’s two late goals, ending on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-6.

Achill did get a chance at redemption ih the runners-up final, beating Kerry’s Annascaul / Castlegregory after extra time by 3-9 to 3-5. Corca Dhuibhne went on to lose the cup final to Templemore of Tipperary.

Breaffy lined out in the four team junior ladies cup against local side Daingean UÍ Chúis at Dingle GAA pitch which was a hard fought battle all the way until the local girls finally hit a goal in the final five minutes to seal a one point victory on a score of 2-2 to 1-4.

Breaffy got some glory on the day in the runners-up final, beating Meath’s Blackhall Gaels by a single point on a score line of 3-8 to 2-10. The junior final was won by Colmcille Ladies of Longford who beat Daingean UÍ Chúis well on a score of 1-10 to 1-2.

Comórtas chairman Pádraig Ó Sé commented; “It was a pleasure to have Breaffy and Achill down with us. There is a strong tradition of Mayo clubs coming down to play in the tournament and long may it last.

The girls should be proud of how they conducted themselves on and off the pitch. It is always pure luck with weather conditions this time of the year but it did not dampen the spirit of the weekend with over 400 players togging out and socialising in West Kerry over the weekend.”

Pádraig continued; “We had no major injuries, the clubs seemed to enjoy our West Kerry hospitality and we packed out hotels, BnB’s and rental houses with the teams, some who travelled from as far away as Tyrone to visit us which shows the enthusiasm that remains for our football festival. I’d especially like to thank our sponsors Lidl as well as the great support we get from Kerry County Council Tourism Unit, Údarás Na Gaeltachta, Lanes & Sons Foods, EJMenswear.com McKeever Sports. Also, I want to sincerely thank our volunteers, referees and of course Lispole GAA, Castlegregory, Dingle, An Gaeltacht GAA clubs and Rugbaí Corca Dhuibhne for proving the pitches.”

There were five cups on offer over the weekend. Other results included Castledaly of Westmeath who won the intermediate men’s cup, Kilmacud Crokes of Dublin won the ladies senior cup while Cork’s Carrigaline won the Dermot Earley senior men’s cup
