In Islandeady

On a cold and wintery afternoon, the Students from St Gerald’s College in Castlebar claimed silverware as they overcame Rice College of Westport in the O’Haire Cup Final.

With a tricky wind present in Islandeady, the opening stages of the game were somewhat cagey as both teams exchanged efforts that failed to find the target.

Cormac Curran got the first goal of the game for Rice College midway through the first half while Ruairi O’Neill secured Rice's second goal after his effort found the net with a fine finish. However the Castlebar based students came into the game and they secured two quick-fire goals of their own thanks to Cillian Keating and Jack Ryan.

Going in at the break, it was St Gerald’s who led 2-5 to Rice College’s 2-2.

The Castlebar students playing in blue kicked on in the second half as they found a real purple patch with Jack Ryan and Jerry Brosnihan featuring prominently. With ten minutes to play, the lead was at five points but the Westport students found a lifeline when substitute Mark O’Connor hit to the net.

The margin was reduced to a single point thanks to Jamie Holmes but St Gerald’s kicked on once again as Ethan Canny booted over with the final score after he went off on an individual run.
