Large number of Mayo players involved in thrilling university final

There was plenty of Mayo involvement in a game that saw University Limerick overcome University of Galway in exciting final

Last night (Wednesday) saw a thrilling Ryan Cup Final played between University of Limerick and University of Galway and there was large Mayo interest as the Limerick students captured the  and title and were crowned league champions.

Three Mayo men lined out with UG: John MacMonagle (Castlebar Mitchels), Tom O’Flaherty (Aghamore) and Dara Hurley (Claremorris). Balla native and former Mayo player Maurice Sheridan was the bainisteoir in charge of the westerners.

However, in an epic high-scoring affair, it was the Limerick students that came out on top as they claimed victory on a 2-20 to 2-16 scoreline.

Claremorris ace Dara Hurley scored the first goal of the evening for the Galway students and Castlebar’s Sean Morahan scored a fantastic goal in the second half for the Limerick students. Morahan was also named player of the match afterwards. 

There was large Mayo representation on the UL team as Sean Morahan (Castlebar Mitchels), Hugh O’Loughlin (Kilmaine), Conal Dawson (Westport), Frank Irwin (Ballina Stephenites), Senan Guilfoyle (Eastern Gaels), Diarmuid Coggins (Crossmolina), Cian McHale, Colm McHale (both Moy Davitts), Jack Melvin, Cathal Corless, Dylan O’Brien (all Davitts) were all part of the victorious squad. Cathal Keaveney (Parke) and Eoin McGreal (Garrymore) were also part of the panel but missed out through injury.
