1941: CASTLEBAR MITCHELS END SEVEN-YEAR HUNT FOR GLORY

Castlebar Mitchels 3-6 Ballycastle 0-5

After a decider where both sides couldn’t be split on the hallowed turf of MacHale Park, many made their way north to Ballina for the second instalment of an epic battle.

The county town boys got off to a rapid start after the three-week break, as the legendary Josie Munnelly fed Denis Egan, who fisted into the back of the Ballycastle net from referee Andy Laffey’s throw-in.

Seamus Daly boomed over a point before Denis Egan arced over from a difficult angle to push the lead out to five.

Before the break, the gap was widened to seven, but Ballycastle replied with a pair of quick-fire singles to leave the score at Castlebar Mitchels 1-4, Ballycastle 0-2 at the interval.

However, Castlebar were not to be deterred by the Northern uptake, and had their second major before long when Daly’s long range effort found the net.

Brown responded with a single for Ballycastle, but the Mitchels weren’t for letting up. Once again, Munnelly was the provider, and Denis Egan rattled the net to end the contest

Late Ballycastle singles narrowed the gap, but the day belonged Castlebar Mitchels, who claimed the title of Mayo kings for the seventh time, and the first since their four-in-a-row glory in the early 1930s.
