1977: GOALS SECURE SHAMROCKS DAY IN THE SUN

Shamrocks 4-6 Garrymore 0-13

ON a momentous day for football in East Mayo, the heroes of the Shamrocks (a combination of players from Aghamore and Kilmovee) secured history as they bested Garrymore to take home their one and only title.

The first day out dominated headlines for all the wrong reasons, as spectators and pundits alike lamented a poor showing from the two sets of soldiers in MacHale Park.

The Shamrocks weren't too fussed, though. They earned a chance to fight another day and halt the momentum of a Garrymore side desperate for four-in-a-row glory.

Billy Fitzmaurice was exceptional in terms of finding the sticks in the first game, setting up an intriguing replay.

Many, including those in The Mayo News, fancied the Garrymore crew to be heading back home with the Moclair Cup in tow.

However, Shamrocks pounced, scoring a quartet of goals to ensure that they would become the fifth club to hoist the Moclair aloft since it was first awarded in 1971, and the first to secure it after a replay.
