Westport St Patrick's 4-15
Carnacon 2-11
In Westport
BOTH teams will take a lot out of this. Westport won on home soil, but Carnacon will be very happy with their display against the county champions.
The hosts got out of the blocks quickly and amassed an impressive haul of 2-2 in the first four minutes after Laura Moran and Katie Chambers buried the ball in the net. There was little to separate the teams on the scoreboard after that.
Carnacon started slowly, and it took the team managed by Danny O'Toole 15 minutes to get motoring. They also closed the ranks defensively and held Westport scoreless for the last 12 minutes of the first half.
The second half began with Westport starting quickly again. Aoife Staunton scored a goal on the follow-up of her own missed penalty, brilliantly saved by Lisa Nally.
Carnacon responded quickly with their first goal of the game. Louise Dowling ended up with the ball in her hands, after Cliodhna Dowling hit the crossbar. Louise sent a perfect strike, hard and low, inside of the post.
Any hope, that might have sprung from that goal, which cut the deficit to six points, was dashed briefly afterwards.
A kick-pass across the Carnacon goal was volleyed into the net by Westport forward Saoirse Ludden, which looked more akin to a soccer strike.
Westport were up by nine points and wouldn't let Carnacon back into the game after that.
However, the former All-Ireland champions refused to fade away and driven on tirelessly by Fiona McHale and Doireann Hughes, they kept the scoreboard ticking over in the final minutes. Hannah Prendergast scored a second goal for the visitors.
The biggest contributor for Westport was half-forward Aoife Staunton who scored a goal and seven points.
Carnacon will dust themselves down and get ready to face Knockmore in the final group stage fixture next Sunday on the same day Westport play Castlebar Mitchels at home.
