The GAA have confirmed that Paul Faloon has been appointed to referee Sunday’s crucial All-Ireland Senior Football Championship game between Mayo and Donegal.

Down native Faloon will take charge of proceedings in Hyde Park, Roscommon, as both sides aim to progress to the next step of the race for Sam Maguire.

Mayo already have experience in 2025 with this particular réiteoir, with Faloon being the man in the middle for the Round One fixture of the group stages, when Cavan defeated the Green and Red.

Here’s what The Mayo News Head of Sport, Michael Gallagher, had to say on the whistler on that occasion.

“He didn’t become a central figure, which is always a good sign,” he penned. “Looked to let play flow as often as possible and obviously had received the memo to penalise any player attempting to over-carry. Correctly issued a black card to Davitt Neary near the end of the first half.”

Mayo supporters will be hoping for a change in fortunes from the last time Faloon was selected for one of their games, as they aim for the all-important win over Jim McGuinness’ Donegal charges.

Faloon was at the centre of some controversy in his native county following the fiasco where he was replaced as the man in the middle for the 2023 Down SFC final between Kilcoo and Burren.

Sunday’s referee has also taken charge of the All-Ireland Under-20 final in recent seasons, and is well-renowned in national refereeing circles.
