MAYO SENIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 1B

Ballintubber 0-18

Westport 1-15

In Clogher

Westport came from seven points down at one stage in the second half to share the spoils in Clogher.

After their opening two league games ending in draws, Pat Holmes' man continued that pattern when they rescued a point late on.

The hosts started smartly with Cillian O’Connor and Stephen O’Malley showing well. With the advantage of a strong wind, Ballintubber’s Michael Plunkett kicked three two-pointers in the opening period, which meant his side led 0-12 to 0-7 at the interval.

The Clew Bay men started the second half well with Killian Kilkelly, Alan Kennedy, and Colm Moran all to the fore. A good midfield battle between Jason Gibbons and Conor McGraynor resulted in kick-outs being well balanced.

With 15 minutes remaining, 'Tubber led by seven and seemed on course for victory, but their West Mayo rivals battled back. Scores from Pat Lambert, Colm Moran, and Joe Grady came at a crucial spell, with a two-pointer from Luke Tunney boosting the surge.

An inch-perfect ball from Colm Moran put Westport substitute John Grady in on goal, and he calmly slotted to the net. With momentum in their favour, Conor Calvey kicked the boys in blue into the lead, but a late free from Ciaran Gavin resulted in the points being shared.
