In Castlebar
THE Mayo U-20s made a firm statement of intent with a stunning twenty-three-point win over Leitrim this evening.
Mayo were barely ever troubled and played some splendid football in equally splendid conditions to stretch their championship-winning streak to three wins from three games.
Mayo were barely troubled in this game. The hosts played with a great variety to their attack and were 2-7 to 0-1 up inside 21 minutes thanks to goals from Colm McHale and Oisín Cronin and two pointers from Tom Lydon and Niall Hurley.
Leitrim, who were missing their star forward Paul Honeyman, pointed through Jack Kelly (3, 1 free) and full-forward Tom Plunkett as Mayo led 2-9 0-4 at the break.
Mayo continued to wreak havoc in the second half, conceding just four points and a few goal chances - which Leitrim botched on each occasion.
Darragh Beirne scored 2-2 from the bench while Tom Lydon scored a stunning goal in the 43rd-minute goal.
This was an excellent performance from Peadar Gardiner’s men, who face Sligo in the fourth and final round of the round-robin phase with their place in the Connacht final almost guaranteed.
