LIDL NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1

WATERFORD 2-13 MAYO 1-6

In Kilmacthomas

A superior Waterford display saw Mayo relegated to Division 2 of the National Football League this afternoon.

The Déise dominated Mayo all over the field, holding them to a single goal in the first half.

Fielding a strong despite sitting third in the table, Waterford controlled the game impressively from the start.

The hosts had five different first-half scorers after Mayo took the through a very well taken Annie Gough goal in second minute.

The Déise levelled through a Kellyanne Hogan free before Aoife Brazil raised a green flag to give Waterford a lead they never gave up.

Mayo failed to score for the rest of the half and trailed 1-7 1-0 at the break with a huge battle in front of them.

To their credit, Liam McHale’s ladies began and ended the game with a flourish, bookending their second half with points from Sinéad Walsh, Ciara Whyte, Nicola O’Malley and Alannah Devereux.

However, the Déise continued to press ahead as Mayo saw many good goal chances saved or miss the target.

A Lauren McGregor goal in the 40th minute made victory an all but impossible task for Mayo.

Both teams were energised after emptying their respective benches as the game progressed towards an inevitable relegation for the Mayo ladies.

Mayo have finished bottom of the Division 1 table with one win from seven games while Waterford have secured third place.

A full report plus reaction from Mayo ladies manager Liam McHale will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
