MAYO footballer Saoirse Delaney has been named in the HEC Rising Stars team.

The Aghamore woman played a pivotal role for Atlantic Technological University Galway (formerly known as GMIT Galway) as they defeated Marino Institute to capture the Donaghy Cup.

Delaney scored a goal from a penalty en route to a 4-10 0-10 victory which was also embellished by a goal from fellow Mayo panellist Allanah Devereux from The Neale. Kilmoremoy’s Milly Sheridan - another Mayo panellist - Charlestown’s Karla Gavaghan,  was also part of the ATU Galway captained by Mayo woman Keeva McDonnell, who plays with St Brigids.

Delaney, who is studying public health nutrition, was the only Mayo player represented on the HEC Rising Stars team, which recognises the contribution of players across the HEC, Lagan, Donaghy, and Moynihan Cups.

The Donaghy Cup is contested by Division 4 third-level teams. The competition consists of four provincial blitzes to decide provincial winners. These provincial winners proceed to an open draw for the semi-finals.

Delaney starred for Aghamore last year as they captured their first-ever Junior A county title. She has since made a number of appearances for the Mayo senior footballers.

Hailing from a family steeped in sport, the Coolnaha native has played camogie for Mayo and Tooreen on numerous occasions.
