In Bekan

THE Mayo Masters were unable to build on a good lead as a more consistent Sligo came good to claim the Ruddy Cup in Bekan this weekend.

Despite going four points up, Mayo fell behind shortly after Sligo began their key forward, Ian Rossiter, opened their account with a penalty in the 17th minute.

The Yates men then hit three points on the trot to build up a 1-4 0-3 half-time lead.

Both sides showed a high level of skill and fitness for the time of year in a game that was accelerated by the bone dry surface of the Connacht GAA Air Dome.

Mayo had a number of good performers, but couldn't produce a consistent enough display against a Sligo team that made better use of possession.

The wides which had plagued the visitors in the first half also began racking up for Mayo, meaning that second half points from John Reilly and Liam McDonnell weren't enough to plug a gap that was three points wide at the full-time whistle.

A full report plus reaction from Mayo's John Reilly will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
