How the teams won their first finals

Mayo Intermediate Final 1996

Moy boys make the breakthrough

Moy Davitts 0-11

Claremorris 1-6

CROSSMOLINA

Moy Davitts captured their first intermediate crown in St Tiernan's Park on an October day in 1996 when they overcame a stern Claremorris test. The men in red were deserving winners and held their opponents to just a single point in the second half, which arrived just before the end.

However, the first half had been a different story. Claremorris built up a seven point lead early on, 1-4 to 0-0, following a goal from Brendan French and points from Johnny Cummins, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Joe Gorham and Brian Gallagher. It looked bad for Moy Davitts at that stage but with Gary Ruane, James Larkin, Pat Clarke, Joe Doherty and Frank Molloy to the fore, they came back into it and only trailed 0-4 to 1-5 at the break.

Ruane ran the show after the resumption and with the outstanding Clarke, Jimmy Byrne and Molloy all finding the target they eventually overhauled the leaders and captured the Sweeeney Cup for the first time ever despite a late surge from the men in blue.

AFTER many close calls the men from the banks of the Deel captured their first intermediate title in Fr O'Hara Park thanks to a hard-fought win over a gallant Davitts outfit.

The vanquished had the wind on their backs in the first but failed to make it count and Crossmolina went to the dressing-room with a one-point lead, 0-4 to 0-3.

Finbarr Conroy opened the scoring for Davitts but their slow build-ups prevented them from pushing on. It looked like that they had scored a crucial goal just before the break but it was disallowed and Crossmolina breathed again.

Liam O'Malley and Tommy Dolan worked hard in the middle for Crossmolina and they were well-positioned but points from Martin Connolly and Pat Ronayne gave Davitts a great boost early in the second half.

However, the North Mayo men worked their way back into it and points from Joe McGann and Gabriel Walsh nudged them in front, before John Maughan swept thee ball to the net to leave the men in maroon on the edge of victory.

Cill Chomáin 3-16

Castlebar Mitchels B 1-7

CASTLEBAR

THERE were scenes of great emotion on the sacred sod of MacHale Park when the final whistle told the world that Cill Chomáin had won their first county junior title. The Erris men swept a fine Castlebar team aside and had the cup won long before the final whistle.

The first half was tight and Cill Chomáin just had their noses in front, 2-3 to 1-3, at the short whistle.

An early goal from Derek Moran got them off and running and another from James McAndrew rose the cheers in the stand, but Mitchels stayed in the game with a fine finish from David Quinn.

However, Cill Chomáin owned the second half and lt the shackles off to kick 1-13 in response to just four points from the home side.

The Erris men cut loose and scores arrived from all over the field. Garrett O'Malley palmed home a goal and 16-year-old attacker Martin Geraghty got his name on the scoreboard as the few left at home in the barony got the bonfires ready.

Mayo Junior Final 1978

Second half surge sees Bonni' win first title

Bonniconlon 1-6

Burrishoole 0-8

CASTLEBAR

A large and passionate crowd watched Bonniconlon win their first junior title in MacHale Park after a tough and entertaining battle with the men from Clew Bay. The winners got the perfect start when Frankie Irwin's shot found the net in the opening minutes and that banished any pre-match nerves.

However, the West Mayo men stayed in the game with midfielder Davy Sweeney particularly prominent. They powered up the pitch and points from John O'Malley, John McManamon, Jimmy Langan, John Pat Sheridan and Christy Loftus left them a point clear at the break despite the best efforts of Anthony Egan and Seamus Judge.

Bonniconlon were the better team in the second half and stopped the Burrishoole attack from functioning, with Egan inspirational in the middle and fine support coming from Paddy Gillard, Noel Judge and substitute Donal Tuohy, who got the winning score.

It was a momentous day for the men from the shadow of the Ox Mountains.
