Mayo Ladies Intermediate Football Championship semi-final
Castlebar Mitchels 1-8 Moy Davitts 1-2
In Castlebar
On a cold, wet, and windy Sunday morning, Castlebar Mitchels defeated Moy Davitts in Munnelly Park in Castlebar to set up a final meeting with Louisburgh, who saw off Claremorris in the other semi-final.
The Castlebar captain, Gráinne Flynn opened the scoring with a free as she along with Suzanne Tuohy tagged on crucial scores throughout the first half. A free from Natasha Gaughan and a well-worked score from Orla McHale helped reduce the deficit. The home side went in at half time leading five points to two.
Castlebar’s leading forward, Gráinne Flynn picked up where she left it in the first half as she stretched the lead to four after an excellent score. The visitors appeared to struggle for scores as prominent players Kathryn Sullivan and Danielle Caldwell defended with bravery. Castlebar’s Niamh Hughes tagged on a well-worked point as they led 0-8 to 0-2 with just ten minutes left.
Suddenly, there was a lifeline for Moy Davitts as forward, Sarah Carney produced a great individual goal. Sadly for them, Suzanne Tuohy hit back with a pristine finish to the net. As the season ends for Moy Davitts, Castlebar will now look forward to a county final clash with Louisburgh.
A full match report plus reaction will be carried in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
