Mayo Junior Football Championship
Eastern Gaels 1-13
Achill 1-6
After a scrappy game of football, Eastern Gaels secured victory and a home championship quarter-final, while Achill will now compete for a third successive Junior B title.
The tone of the game was set in the opening few minutes. Eastern Gaels converted a penalty while Brian Lavelle scored a stunning goal all before the eighth minute.
However, Eastern Gaels managed to build on the early goal, while Achill did not.
The men from Brickens kicked six points on the bounce, while Achill failed to add to their tally, leaving the scoreline at 1-6 to 1-0 at the interval.
Eastern Gaels showed their quality in the second period. They kicked four points without reply to lead by an impressive ten points, before Achill scored their first point of the game.
Peter Gallagher raised the white flag for the West Mayo men before being shown a straight red card, reducing the Junior B champions to fourteen men.
Despite Achill finding their shooting boots toward the end of the game by kicking five points, Eastern Gaels kept them at arm's length.
Former Mayo Minor, Senan Guilfoyle shone for Eastern Gaels, kicking an impressive 1-7 in total.
