Achill 2-11
Ballycastle 0-3
In Achill
After a forgettable first half, Achill have claimed their first two points of the 2024 championship at home to Ballycastle.
The opening 30 minutes were sloppy from both teams. Achill were playing against a strong breeze which was affecting their flow of play, while Ballycastle were attempting a long ball strategy to Conor Barrett, but Barrett was being closely marked by a strong Achill defence.
The home side kicked a point in the opening minute, however, the next score didn’t arrive until the 22nd minute.
Ballycastle got their first score of the day in the 24th minute after Fionnán Caulfield raised the white flag.
The scoreboard at the interval read a mere 0-3 to 0-1 in favour of Achill.
The second half was a different story. Achill kicked four points within four minutes of the second period and they didn’t stop there. Two goals in the space of five minutes from James Joyce and Brian Lavelle spurred the West Mayo men to victory.
The Achill defence put in a superb shift to make sure Ballycastle never got going in the second period.
All eyes now turn to Achill’s final group game against Eastern Gaels, who have already qualified for the quarter-finals.
